Located in Southeast Asia, Cambodia is a nation of 69,900 sq. miles, slightly smaller than the US state of Oklahoma, bordered by Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and the Gulf of Thailand. It has a population of over 11 million, with the primary occupation of its people being agriculture. In the Twentieth Century, Cambodia was torn apart by the various wars that devastated the area that was once known as Indochina (constituted by Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia). After the Vietnam War, communist Khmer Rouge guerrillas took over the nation in 1975, and initiated a fanatical regime that led to mass starvation and genocide. The Khmer Rouge lost power in 1979 after provoking a Vietnamese invasion of Cambodia, but they proceeded to wage a brutal civil war that did not fully end until the late '90s.
