Conservation

For our conservation efforts, The Cardamom Project has partnered with Fauna & Flora International (FFI), the British conservation organization that is leading the international effort to preserve the Cardamoms. FFI works closely with the Royal Government of Cambodia. We work with FFI to raise money for and awareness of this shared cause. Specific examples of these projects might include:

Patrol programs and information posts in the two wildlife sanctuaries in the Cardamoms that help reduce illegal, environmentally destructive activities.
Camera trapping throughout the Cardamoms to improve our knowledge of wildlife presence and habitat, and to obtain color photographs that help immensely in the public campaign for conservation of the Cardamoms.
Socioeconomic and agronomic studies in the areas of the Cardamoms where humans live in order to establish a clearer picture of how these communities interact with their environment, and of the options for improving their livelihoods without damaging the environment.

Environmental Education

In order to fulfill our mission, more than just basic conservation efforts will be needed. For the people side of our mission, The Cardamom Project works in partnership with other organizations operating in Cambodia to inform ordinary Cambodians about this part of their national heritage, and to involve them in its preservation. We also plan on developing our own programs to be administered independently. Given the urgency of the situation, our primary focus so far has been on conservation. However, we plan to develop and begin instituting our environmental education programs during 2002. Specific examples of these will include:

Developing and administering a multifaceted public education program that, in partnership with Cambodian NGO's and government ministries, tells the story of the Cardamoms via video and written materials.
Funding field work opportunities for Cambodian university students in biology to study in this extraordinary ecosystem in their own backyard.
Helping to fund and produce a wildlife documentary film that conveys the unique and compelling environmental value of the Cardamom Mountains to Cambodia and to the world.
